For women with long or shoulder length hair, the combination
of winter weather and the wrong hair dryer can result in dry, fluffy or
unmanageable hair. Follow these recommendations from someone who has finally
learned how to get the most out of their hair, despite the problems of winter:
Start with clean and hydrated hair. Consider a protein pack
treatment once a week.
Remember that your scalp will not produce as much oil in
winter as it does in summer. Consider changing your shampooing schedule at
least every other day to avoid excessive stress on your hair.
Use a good detangling solution before combing out tangles.
Follow with a reconstructive treatment (often an oil formulation) to help
soften the cuticle and cover the hair shaft.
Apply your favorite styling solution, be it a root lift for
height or a cream to help create a stylish look.
When choosing a hair dryer, select a model with multiple
heat settings (there really will be times when you don't want Nuclear Hot!) AND
multiple fan speeds. These options will give you more control over drying and
styling.
Start drying the hair at the roots using just your fingers,
advancing down the length of the hair. While people with fine hair often turn
their heads to dry, this can create a "big hair" look for people with
thick hair.
When most of the water is out of your hair, grab a paddle
brush with natural boar bristles. Run the brush through your hair while using
the blow dryer to remove any remaining moisture. Some hair dryers even have a
comb attached to the end of the nozzle for this purpose.
